The former Bafana Bafana midfielder Rowan Hendricks is likely to be appointed as the new head coach at Ikapa Sporting.
No Bones With Jones can confirm that the 43-year-old former Cape Town Spurs, Ajax Cape Town, Supersport United player amongst others, is back in the Mother City and could be unveiled as the coach of the ABC Motsepe-outfit by no later than Monday.
Ikapa’s owner and chairman Shaun Petersen has kept his cards close to his chest up until now while personally taking charge of his club’s pre-season proceedings.
Petersen was rather reluctant on confirming Hendricks’ appointment, but if one read between the lines, it pretty much look like a formality.
Other candidates for the vacant post included names like Ashraf Calvert and Hendricks’ former national teammate, Bradley August.
Petsersen conceded that Hendricks’ appointment, or anyone for that matter “won’t come cheap”.
“Look, if we can come to terms it will be okay and I think he can be the right fit with where we want to go and what we want to do in the league,” said Petersen.
“But then again, it is all about the rands and cents at the end of the day. But we’ll see on Monday.”
Hendricks is of course no stranger to Petersen and his Ikapa club after the former spent a season on their books as a player back in in 2009/’10-season.
“I coached him and also brought him to Battswood,” Petersen further stated. He was still in his last years of his playing career, and he played under me at Battswood.
“He was at Ikapa at the very start. Played internationally and he’s got his Uefa B-licence. He played for Bafana (Bafana) as well so, it is a good fit us if we can come to an agreement.”
It’s clear that Petersen want his Ikapa-outfit to be challenge for honours, especially with Hendricks’ possible appointment for the 2023/24 Motsepe campaign.
Petersen stated that he finds immense pleasure in competing and holding their own in the Second Division due to his passion and love for the game – but his focus could well change as he’ll expect Hendricks could be the catalyst..
“At some stage you need to win it, or you need to sell it. So ja, it can’t go on forever,” Petersen concluded.
