There is a notion about Hanover Park FC’s chairman Rieduwaan “Warnie” Anthony and that is: ‘What Warnie wants, Warnie gets!”
Therefore, it shouldn’t be a surprise if he lures one of the deadliest strikers in the local amateur ranks in Silver Spurs’ Ameen Awaldien (pictured) to Downberg Road.
Awaldien, along with Darren “Billy” Omaticus, has between them dominated the Golden Boot award in the previous five seasons in Safa Cape Town’s Third Division.
And just like Billy – who has moved a division up with FN Rangers in the ABC Motsepe League, Awaldien could follow suit and join their rivals Hanover Park FC.
No Bones with Jones has heard from a reliable source that Anthony has his sights set firmly on ‘The Lion’ as Awaldien is affectionately known as by his beloved Spurs from Silvertown. Needless to say, this will surely not go down well with the latter.
So, too, has the newbie in Eagle Performance Academy shown interest in Spurs’ top marksman.
Anthony has also already shown his hand with the capture of the former Ajax Cape Town and Maritzburg United player, Ziyaad Eksteen.
Ziggy, as Eksteen is better known, recently put pen to paper and the Brasse Vannie Park has expectations that Awaldien will also commit – even if it is just for one season to try his luck.
It is also no secret that money is a key factor for players moving to influential clubs and Hanover Park is certainly one of them with buying power and prestige.
The club’s successful track record, coupled with its ambition to win promotion, is also what sways players to join.
In all fairness, a move to a higher division could likely assist Awaldien to take his game to the next level and challenge him more as a player.
However, it will also be interesting to see if the 29-year-old striker will be able to maintain his fantastic scoring rate in a tougher and more competitive league.
Awaldien is currently on the books of Hazendal United which is in the running for the league title at the Rygate LFA, as well as vying for the last eight of the prestigious Coke Cup.
