The Ashford Athletic Football Club will host a memorial service on Wednesday 3 April, as a way of paying their last respects to their fallen icon Winty Engeldoe (79).
No Bones with Jones has been informed that it will be held at their clubhouse in Heathfield at 19:30.
The former CDFA president, who passed away on 21 March after a long illness, was cremated last week with the service held at the St John’s Anglican Church in Wynberg.
This fallen icon was a humble soul with strong SACOS principles and never wavered from it. For Engeldoe it was also imperative that the less privileged – within the football circles and broader society – have a role in the community.
Rod Solomon, a friend, paid tribute on social media: “He was a true gentleman whose word was his honour. I remember a friend and myself wanted to do a spectacular development at Cape District that would have benefitted the Union and community immensely… Winston was an enthusiastic supporter but the City of Cape Town’s bureaucracy stymied it.
“He was a football and Cape District man through and through. He truly put his heart and soul to keep William Herbert in a good condition,” Solomons wrote.
Engeldoe took over the reign as president of CDFA from Vivien Julius in 2000 and remained in this position until 2015 – making him the longest serving leader at the LFA.
This also underlines the astute administrator that he was and the confidence showed in him.
Some of the anecdotes shared with our website is that he was also a top cricketer for Victoria and opened the bowling with the former Western Province player, Vincent Barnes.
Engeldoe (79) is survived by his wife Lorna. sons, Graeme, Karl, Lars, Jean-Troy, Rory as well as grandchildren Nina, Gemma, Zoe, Reece, Zara and Wyatt.
