Despite laying down a marker early on, Junction Rovers head coach Crissando De Weber instructed his troops to remain “humble and focussed” following a comfortable 2-0 victory over the stream winners of last season, Hanover Park FC, at the Downberg Sports Complex on Saturday.
Goals via new recruit Ameer Moses and Safwaan Christian in each half gave the visitors from Heidveld the perfect start to the new ABC Motsepe League campaign.
De Weber says what makes this victory extra special is that they had to adjust their plans after initially being drawn against Hope FC at their ‘Harry Gwala’ home venue in Heideveld.
“And we also kept a clean sheet away from home,” a proud De Weber said to No Bones with Jones.
“I told the boys if we win the one-on-one battles, nothing can stop us – and they did exactly that, winning the duels all over the pitch, and that is what makes the victory so sweet.
De Webs, as he is called, has also warned his players that one swallow does not make a summer and that there is still a long way to go.
“Look, we just wanted to start on a good note because every game is going to be like a cup final for us, and if they are not going to treat it like a cup final, you will just find yourself by the wayside. So, we have about 23, 24 cup finals to go before we can think big. I also told them to remain humble and focussed on what is in front of them as we have not achieved anything,” De Weber concluded.
