When you’ve been around the proverbial block more often than not, and successful at that, then having to adapt to a new culture and environment becomes like second nature…
At least that is what Andrew Pequeno is currently displaying at his new Grassy Park United FC after a perfect start and setting the pace in Stream A after two wins against Batalion FC away (2-1) and Barcelona FC (4-0) from Beaufort-West.
Needless to say, Pequeno has shown that he has the ability to weave his magic wherever he goes, Hanover Park FC, Vasco da Gama… his track record speaks for itself. Hence he does things his way, or the highway.
It’s no secret that many didn’t take too kindly to the fact when he shook up Grassy Park releasing some regulars and blending what he had with his own. This doesn’t always make coaches popular, but Pequeno does what is required as his reputation is on the line. And with a wily old fox like Mangaliso “Shakes” Ntombana in his camp, Grassy Park should be considered as one of the favourites in Stream B.
But then again Pequeno is as modest as they come and would not want to blow his own horn but stated to No Bones with Jones.
“It has been a seamless transition at GP. There was a very good core of players already at Grassy Park so we just added a few more experienced players and a few more unders that we felt we needed in certain areas.
“Coach Shakes and I have a very good tech team behind us and we are taking each game as it comes. Stream B is looking like Stream A from last season where it is going to be tough away from home plus anyone can beat anyone as the quality is there. We know the challenge that lies ahead and we are taking nothing for granted.
“We have made a solid start but there are a few things we still need to get right which I feel will happen the more games we play. The support is great at home and away games from our supporters and this to me has been inspiring and also a great motivator,” Pequeno concluded.
Pequeno says they will have to up the ante for their upcoming two away games against Maties FC (Saturday) and Ammar Soccer Academy which will be a sterner test.
“These are two very tough matches,” Pequeno conceded. “This stream is tough man. Away games are never easy,” the Grassy Park mentor concluded.
