Bradley August could not have asked for a better birthday present after Inter City FC claimed their first victory of the season with a hard-fought 3-2 win over newcomers Saxon Rovers at Royal Road on Friday evening.
The result came just a day after the former Bafana Bafana midfielder celebrated his 48th birthday, providing a timely boost following last week’s disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Seaside Spurs.
August was delighted with both the result and the response from his players.
“Yes, I’m very happy and also for the players,” August said to No Bones with Jones.
However, the Inter City coach quickly shifted his focus to the challenge that lies ahead, with a crucial encounter against Hout Bay looming this Friday.
“Another massive challenge on Friday against Hout Bay,” August further added. “It’s an important week of training and planning for the game.”
Inter City will head into the fixture with renewed confidence after getting off the mark in the league, while Hout Bay continue their rebuilding process under coach Xolela Ndude.
August is no stranger to his upcoming opponents. Having previously served as head coach at Hout Bay, he knows the club and its structures well. He also shares a close relationship with Ndude, whom he coached during his time at the club.
Despite the friendship, August expects an intense battle when the two sides meet at Wynberg Military Base.
“I know them well and they have some very good young players from the community,” August said. “They also have experienced players who know the league. Xolela is a very good coach and a very good friend of mine, a real football man.
“I coached him when I was there and later coached alongside him when I returned to Hout Bay. But friendship will be put aside on Friday. It will be fireworks on Friday night at Wynberg Military Base.”
Inter City’s confidence is understandable after finally opening their account for the season. With momentum on their side and home-ground advantage,
August’s men will be hoping to build on their breakthrough victory and strengthen their position in the standings against a Hout Bay side currently occupying sixth place in Stream A.
