Metropolitan LFA’s Congratulatory Letter Raises More Questions Than Praise for Their Champion Sporting FC

Does the apparent resentment towards Sporting FC run so deep that even a moment of recognition has become too much to ask?

That question inevitably arises following the Metropolitan LFA’s long-awaited confirmation of its representative for the SAFA Cape Town Third Division Playoffs.

What should have been a straightforward congratulatory message celebrating Sporting’s achievement instead left many scratching their heads.

In a letter circulated to clubs, Metropolitan LFA General Secretary, Latasha Fredericks, acknowledged the conclusion of the season and congratulated league winners.

Yet, remarkably, nowhere in the correspondence was Sporting, the LFA’s flagship champion and playoff representative, mentioned by name or wishing them well for their upcoming quest.

For a club that earned the right to represent the Metropolitan LFA on the regional stage, the omission is difficult to ignore.

The message read:

“Good morning all,

“Hope you are well. The final league standings/logs were submitted to SAFA CT yesterday.

“Well done to the clubs, players, managers and supporters for a beautiful season, we really appreciate you. Well done to the league winners of the respective divisions. Let soccer win. Blessed day further,” the message concluded.

While the statement offers blanket congratulations, many within football circles will surely question why Sporting, the league’s outright champions and playoff-bound representatives, could not be afforded a specific mention.

After all, opportunities to celebrate success and acknowledge excellence do not come around every day. Especially after Sporting narrowly missed out on the league to eventual winners Goulburn Athletic last season. So, when they do, surely the champions deserve a bit more than a passing reference hidden within a generic message,

Whether the omission was intentional or merely an oversight, is open to interpretation. What is not open to debate, however, is that Sporting’s achievement warranted greater recognition from the very organisation tasked with overseeing and promoting football within the Metropolitan region.

For now, Sporting will likely let their football do the talking. But the silence surrounding their title triumph in official correspondence has certainly not gone unnoticed.

Below is the final log submitted by Fredericks which indicates that Sporting is their 2026 champion.
