If ever there was a reminder that reputations count for little in the ABC Motsepe League, this weekend provided it.
From Diadora FC’s latest setback to Grassy Park United’s dramatic late triumph, while Batalions FC and One FC flexed their title credentials, the race for supremacy took another fascinating twist.
The biggest blow of the round was arguably suffered by Diadora FC, who slumped to a 2-1 home defeat against Maties FC at Manenberg Sports Field. For a side that set the standard during their debut campaign, the latest defeat only deepens concerns that Diadora are struggling to recapture the form that once made them one of the division’s most feared outfits.
While Diadora stumbled, Batalions FC marched on.
The Mbekweni outfit produced a ruthless display to dispatch Relentless Football 3-0, sending another warning to the rest of the league. Clinical in attack and solid at the back, Batalions barely looked troubled as they collected a vital three points.
Not to be outdone, One FC delivered a similarly emphatic performance at Parow Park, brushing aside Mbekweni Cosmos 3-0 to keep the pressure on the frontrunners.
The drama of the weekend unfolded at Rustdene Sports Ground, where log leaders Grassy Park United edged Royal Blues 3-2 in a thrilling five-goal encounter to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches. Just when it seemed the points would be shared, the league leaders found a way to snatch victory, showing the hallmark of champions: grinding out results when it matters most.
Elsewhere, Barcelona FC and Ammar Soccer Academy shared the spoils in a hard-fought 1-1 draw, with neither side able to find a decisive breakthrough.
With every passing week, the margins are becoming finer, the pressure greater and the stakes higher.
For Relentless Football, Royal Blues and Mbekweni Cosmos, the warning lights are flashing. For Batalions FC and One FC, momentum is building. And for the rest of the chasing pack, the message is simple: Grassy Park United are not just leading the race, they’re setting the pace. Fail to keep up, and the title could soon be out of sight.
