It was only a matter of time before Camps Bay FC’s assistant coach Ashraf Calvert would have been scooped up by a big fish – and that time is now!
No Bones with Jones can confirm that ‘Assie’ as Calvert is affectionately known, has been poached by TS Galaxy as new head coach for their women’s Hollywoodbets Super League outfit.
Details of the agreement are still sketchy, but matters are a “formality” so to speak.
This comes at no surprise as Calvert’s successful track record in Cape Town speaks for itself. He has won the Nedbank Cup regional title with Clarewood JPM (now Antalyaspor), as well as the ABC Motsepe League title with Young Bafana last season.
Calvert is also no stranger to women’s football as he steered Vasco da Gama Ladies to an unprecedented and historic treble after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Last season he guided Rygersdal Ladies to win promotion to the Regional Women’s Development League against all odds and it’s fair to say he is one of the most decorated coaches on the local front – male or female.
Calvert’s capture is a blow for Camps Bay FC but certainly a massive coup for Galaxy.
The irony of Calvert’s appointment is that Galaxy bought Vasco’s Hollywoodbets pro status in 2023 before they relocated to Mpumalanga. Now, Calvert can attend to his unfinished business albeit under a new entity.
