Day one of the 37th edition of the Bayhill Premier Cup at the Erica Park Sport Complex in Belhar went according to plan for the top academy sides except for Stellenbosch FC who had a scare of note.
The team from the Cape Winelands are probably still trying to figure out what went wrong during their 2-2 draw against Jomos Power from Atlantis.
This results as yet another indication that nothing can be taken for granted at this Easter spectacle and that if you don’t pitch up on the day, you will suffer the consequences.
But then again Jomos Power has shown in the recent past they are not to be intimidated by the academy side after they also beat Cape Town Spurs during the final round robin knockout stages by 1-0 at the William Herbert Sport Complex about a month ago.
This just underlines that their point against Stellies was no fluke.
Meanwhile other academy outfits such as Cape Town Spurs had to dig deep to overcome Eagles Performance Academy by 2-1 while Spurs’ rivals, Cape Town City edged out Everton by the same scoreline to give them both a perfect start to the tournament.
So, too did Antalyaspor JPM Cape Town put their best foot forward with a slender 1-0 win over the Mitchells Plain-based side Stanturf United.
The inaugaral winner of the Bayhill, Matroosfontein also got their campaign off to a perfect start win a 2-0 win over another Mitchells Plain outfit in Juventus AFC while Vasco da Gama and Hout Bay United played out to a 1-1 draw
