The ABC Motsepe League relegation-threatened Junction Rovers are preparing for the most important match in the history of their club when they welcome fellow strugglers Inter City to the “Harry Gwala” on Wednesday in a bid to save their Second Division status.
Needless to say, this is a proverbial six-pointer that could make or break both sides’ season as Junction is anchored at the bottom of the log with seven points from 14 matches, while City is slightly better off on 11 points with the same amount of matches played in Stream A.
A win for either will definitely ease some relegation concerns with nine matches to play after tonight’s encounter, but for Junction’s sake, it could be all over should they not pick up any points.
On paper, City will fancy their chances in Heideveld, but one never knows with Junction, as a wounded animal is a dangerous animal, hence one cannot emphasize the importance of this battle of the basement sides.
Meanwhile, Cape Town Spurs will be eager to close the gap at the top when they welcome the log leaders Hout Bay United FC to Ikamva.
After a slow start to the season, Spurs have found momentum under coach Nasief Morris and are undefeated in the previous three games, after wins against Vasco da Gama (1-0), Inter City FC (1-0) and FN Rangers (2-1).
The previous defeat was a 1- 4 loss to Hout Bay United at the coastal side’s home ground back in February.
Other interesting match-up will see fellow stream contenders Hanover Park FC trying to keep the pressure on Hout Bay FC when they host Arreshaat Daniels’ FN Rangers at the Downberg Road Sport Complex in Hanover Park.
While a lot rests on this fixture for the coach Anwar Gallant, Daniels and his troops are only playing for pride while Gallant and his troops will expect to do the double over their rivals after a narrow 1-0 win during the first-round clash.
The newcomer Sea Point Swifts (Hope FC) fixture against Andrew Pequeno’s Vasco da Gama has been called due to alleged unrest in Manenberg. The former has been operating like nomads in recent weeks after their lease expired at the Erica Park Sport Complex.
So, too is Santos’ game against Ubuntu FC called off after Ubuntu requested for it too called off during their Bayhill Premier Cup commitments – and Santos obliged!
This was also confirmed by Ubuntu’s owner, Casey Prince, who explained to No Bones with Jones. “The game between Ubuntu Football Academy and Santos FC was postponed until May because of Ubuntu’s participation in the Bayhill Premier Cup and Santos FC’s cooperation in putting the good of those players first.”
