Despite the obstacles, challenges and politics, one has to concede that Brandon Truter’s rise through the coaching ranks in South African football is nothing short of impressive.
Hence, the 48-year-old Cape Town-born has quite a few offers lined up for his services – one being outside the borders of South Africa.
This comes after No Bones with Jones was informed that Brakkies, as Truter is called, is very much in demand and weighing up his options before taking up his next coaching position after a ‘sabbatical’ of nearly four months.
According to Truter, he’s not at liberty to disclose any names as his agent is still busy negotiating with the clubs.
“Look, I should have a clearer picture by Friday, but yes, there are some offers on the table and we are still deciding what will be best for me,” he added.
Truter has been around the proverbial block, as they say, and wherever he ended up coaching, he made an immediate impact – especially at Swallows, where he won the NFD league title, secured promotion to the PSL, and also qualified for the Top 8 during his tenure with the Birds.
His subsequent spell at AmaZulu, where he followed in the footsteps of Benni McCarthy, was, however, less successful, but Brakkies still managed to steer them to a credible fourth position while also competing in the Caf Champions League, where they fell short at the group stages. Truter guided the KZN side to the MTN8 final but succumbed to Orlando Pirates, collecting the runners-up medal.
The following season, the Mitchells Plain-born coach took charge of a struggling Sekhukhune United side and transformed them from relegation favourites to a credible Top 8 side. He also picked up the tag of ‘Giant Slayer’, as well as finishing as runners-up in the Nedbank Cup final.
To think Brakkies would have been the perfect fit for a club like Cape Town City who have fallen from grace – but it was made crystal clear that any coach of colour is not cut out for the Citizens – what a disgrace!
