Chuffed Miller silently optimistic after Greenwood dented Rygersdal’s title ambitions on home soil

It’s been a topsy-turvy season for coach Lionel Miller and his Greenwood Athletic troops, to say the least, but the experienced mentor soldiers focused on only what is in front of them.

Buoyed by a fantastic 3-1 away win against the high flying Rygersdal FC at the Meadows on Tuesday, indicated that Greenwood is not ready to throw in the towel yet despite many proclaiming already that Saxon Rovers is ‘running away’ with the league – and the log doesn’t lie, despite there being about 15 games left which should give Saxons’ rivals with a glimmer of hope.

Needless to say, Greenwood definitely dented the newbies Rygersdal’s title aspirations and also ended their 12-match winning streak in the process, which is no mean feat. Look, football is a funny old game and it can really make or break anyone.

So, mathematically, there’s still an outside chance for the teams like Cape Town City and Rygers, who occupy the second and third positions respectively; however, the log leaders, Saxons, will probably have none of that.

When Miller was probed by a fellow journalist regarding their title ambitions, the coach immediately stated: “Please don’t ask me about our prospects of the league as I’m not looking so far ahead, I play what’s in front of me.

“Besides, have you seen the gap? We’ll enjoy our victory against a good Rygersdal team. I’m chuffed as the boys did what was expected and needed of them. It’s something to savour for now, as our season wasn’t the most consistent thus far.

“We have to build on our performance against a well-organized and disciplined team in Rygersdal and we’ll try to put our best foot forward in the future and to end off the season as strong as possible,” Miller concluded.
