Technically today is D-Day for Safa Cape Town to present its verdict regarding the ‘Goalgate’ scandal.
The region indicated last week Wednesday that it needed an extension of seven days to finalize the sensitive and complex case of alleged corruption at the Third Division Playoffs at the Williams Herbert Sports Complex.
Freakish scorelines of 22-0 and 35-1 were recorded in Group H which consisted of West Coast United, Electric City, Rebels FC, Diadora FC and Two For Joy.
Safa Cape Town has since appointed a top legal expert in Sean Lea to assist Safa CT’s deputy president Andrew Bothman to investigate the matter.
Lea subsequently interviewed all relevant parties involved including officials with the exception of Two for Joy who did pitch up to give their version of events.
No Bones with Jones understands that a second Regional Executive Committee meeting is to be held on Wednesday (22 November) to decide the outcome of events.
Needless to say, the Cape’s football fraternity is waiting with bated breath to hear the outcome of the investigation.
This development pertains to the probe of the freakish scorelines when 58 goals were scored in two matches in Group H, dubbed as the “Group of Death” which included Rebels FC, Two For Joy, West Coast, Electric City and Diadora FC.
Things started to get interesting in the last group matches when Two For Joy and Diadora were both deadlocked on seven points but the former had a superior goal difference.
Two for Joy had to beat West Coast and Diadora needed to replicate that against Electric City.
The eyebrows were raised in the second half of Diadora and Two for Joy’s respective matches when it was raining goals in both matches which had the tongues wagging.
In the end, Diadora FC topped the group with a 35-1 scoreline and progressed to the quarterfinals on goal difference of +38, while Two For Joy had +36 following their 22-0 win.
