Family ties ‘broken’ as Mighty United pip Goal Hunters on penalties to rule Khayelitsha LFA with back-to-back titles

There was no love lost between Goal Hunters’ coach, Anella Bota and his counterpart and cousin Mighty United’s Anelani Bhungane as family-ties were ‘broken’ for the love of the game.

This follows after Bhungane walked away with historic back-to-back titles and bragging rights when his side was crowned as the champions of the Khayelitsha LFA’s for 2026.

Mighty beat Hunters 4-2 on penalties after the game ended in a 2-2 stalemate after regulation time at the Khayelitsha Stadium on Sunday. The top four teams in each of the five LFA’s in Khayelitsha were assembled to form the 20 contenders at the second edition of this cup held at the various venues in the area.

Meanwhile, Bota was gracious in defeat saying they were already written off before a ball was even kicked.

“Many wrote our story early, but the team answered on the field,” Botha pointed out to No Bones with Jones. “I cannot believe it was our first time in the tournament and we went straight to the final and unfortunately we lost to a better opponent on the day. Faith carried us, the Green colours carried us. We learn in the valleys,” Bota concluded.
