It’s all about balance for ‘spot-on’ Young Idols in Coke Cup

Young Idols FC coach Kaylem Mentoor emphasized that the balance in the squad has been “spot-on” and the key reason for their fairytale run in the Coke Cup.

Idols booked their place in the last four following a 5-2 win over Bluegum United in the quarterfinal tie at the Du Noon Sport Complex on Sunday.

Needless to say, the Manenberg-based side is well on track to repeat their success of 2015 when they lifted their maiden title against all odds.

Fast forward eight years and Idols, who was not given much hope in this season’s competition, has shown signs of repeating this feat.

Their coach, Kaylem Mentoor, a former Ajax Cape Town product, said his team has done the plough work in the last few seasons in order to reap the benefits and results of their labour – and now it is showing.

“We sent our youngsters away (to Crystal Palace) last season to gain experience and it has been beneficial to us so far,” Mentoor said to No Bones with Jones. “The players are now looking more mature and we’ve blended them with a few experienced players which makes the balance spot-on, perfect, you know.

Our website understands there is an amicable agreement amongst clubs at the Manenberg LFA which has resulted in Idols surprising friend and foe.

“Our club is all about giving opportunities and breeding youngsters as that’s what I’m used to with Ajax all these years. I believe in the youngsters and with the right mentality and attitude they can make a difference. They are already showing the signs and that makes me very proud,” Mentoor added.
