Don’t be surprised if Mathilda Ontong (pictured with ball) of Burnley Womens Football Club gets poached by Ashraf Calvert’s new TS Galaxy Queens outfit.
No Bones with Jones has reliably learnt that the 24-year-old no-nonsense defender is due to make the step up to the Hollywoodbets Women’s Super League shortly.
It is no secret that Calvert – who was recently appointed by Galaxy’s owner Tim Sukazi as their head coach of the women’s pro team – would have signalled to his employer that to build a winning team, Ontong’s services would be required.
And who would argue with one of the most successful local coaches of the male or female clubs in Calvert? After all, that is why Galaxy roped in Calvert as he is successful wherever he goes.
Ontong, regarded as one of the best (central) defenders in Cape Town and the country, also received her long overdue call-up to the Banyana Banyana squad but never featured due to controversial issues.
Ontong was also named Safa Cape Town’s player of the season underlining her quality as a player.
Needless to say, the time is now ripe for Mathilda to pack her bags and head up north as she has been way too loyal to her Bonteheuwel based club who has been playing in the Sasol League for a number of seasons.
Should Ontong’s move come to fruition, she could be guaranteed a regular spot in the national team because she is quality and it needs to be displayed at the highest level.
