After almost a year and a half, it’s expected that Safa Cape Town’s beleaguered Treasurer Wayne Weitz will finally get his proverbial day in court to state his version of events that led to his rather questionable suspension.
The Metropolitan chairman will appear before a DC committee at the Rygate Sports Complex (18:30) on Wednesday (9 April 2025) to reveal the other side of the story that was never told since he was suspended last year.
Many have been wondering what could have led to Safa CT taking this drastic action by axing its treasurer – especially given the fact that Weitz and the region’s president Bennett Bailey have been close allies for more than four decades.
It must be noted that this duo also played an instrumental part during the dark days of apartheid and fought for justice, freedom and democracy – all this and staying true to their Sacos principles.
Hence, when this split between Bailey and Weitz became public, the whole of the football fraternity and society at large was very surprised which is why the majority is now waiting with bated breath to see how Weitz’s DC hearing will play out.
Needless to say, there are already murmurs about whether Weitz, a born and bred Sea Points Swifts stalwart, will be given a fair trial – especially when one takes into account how he has been thrown to the wolves without any explanation from his side.
Bear in mind, the region confirmed Weitz has not stolen any money, but stated that issues related to governance and protocol were not adhered to and forced them to chop him.
Furthermore, one hopes that this case gets wrapped up today for the sake of both parties and not postponed again, as this will be the second hearing after the initial hearing last month was postponed two hours prior to commencement.
Also, and more importantly one can only hope and pray that the members chairing the DC, will be neutral and impartial to ensure that Weitz gets a fair trial.
