‘New Kid on the Block’ challenges Mondale in Kay Motsepe Final

It is the new kid on the block, Bergvliet High School, versus the seasoned campaigner, Mondale High School, in a mouthwatering clash fitting for the final of the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship.

This showdown for under 19’s takes place at Elsbury Park (15:00) on Friday and will be officiated by the Premier Soccer League ref, Chris Kastoor.

Both Bergvliet and Mondale had to dig deep under difficult conditions – a bumpy pitch and blistering winds surely tested the players’ skillset and resolve.

Coach Theo Hempe’s Bergvliet High narrowly beat Thembelihle High School by 1-0 – thanks to a late penalty from Ashraf Van der Schyf.

Meanwhile, Mondale High, a former champion in 2013, will no doubt be a tough nut to crack due to their experience in this competition.

Coach Valhatiem Raynard’s troops had a rather easier affair after they beat Khayolwethu High School by 2-0 in the other semi-final.

Needless to say, this will be Mondale’s fourth final of the Western Cape leg of the lucrative school’s competition, while Bergvliet, predominantly known for its rugby prowess, is on a mission to make its mark in the soccer circles.

In the under 14 sections for boys Herzlia High School scrapped through to the final after beating Goodwin Lewis’ Portavue Primary School by 5-3 (0-0) on penalties.

Herzlia High School will now face Itsitsa Primary School who comfortably beat Sophakama Primary School by 4-1.

The girl’s final sees a match-up between Encontseni Primary School and Lwazi Primary School after the former edged out Fairview Primary School by 2-1.

Lwazi beat Imbasa Primary School by 5-4 in a goal feast to book their spot in the final.

The national under 19-winner will pocket R3 million while the under 14 sections for boys and girls bank R1 million each.
