Salie goes full circle – back in pro-ranks with Cape Town Spurs

Tawfeeq Salie’s resurgence back into the pro structures of South African football is a classic example of hard work, patience and dedication.

The former Camps Bay FC goalie has been roped back into the professional set-up by Cape Town Spurs, who were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship First Division last season. He joined the now-defunct Ajax Cape Town as a 16-year-old from amateur side Blue Bells in 2008 – and stayed at Ikamva until 2012.

“Yes, I’m happy to be back,” Salie said to No Bones with Jones.  “It’s like going the full circle,” he added.

Of course, Salie’s got the advantage of hindsight of having been there, indicating that he will surely make the most of this opportunity.

At 33 years old Salie is well travelled after his time with other First Division clubs like the now-defunct Cape Umoya, as well as the PSL’s Maritzburg United.

So, Salie knows all too well that a break like this is few and far between after spending a couple of seasons in the amateur ranks with Clarewood JPM and Young Bafana where he won the Nedbank Cup Regional title as well as the league.

Last season the former SA u.20 goalie also played an instrumental role in ensuring that the Beach Boys kept their Hollywoodbets Third Division status after their debut season.

“I really enjoyed my stints in the Motsepe and Third Division and I am grateful for the opportunity from the amateur clubs,” Salie further explained. “I still enjoy my football and that is important, you know,” Salie concluded.
