Young Matroos side flexing its muscles in Third Division

Matroosfontein FC is already flexing its muscles and is looking good value for money at the summit of the Hollywoodbets Third Division.

Matroos, along with Vasco da Gama, Cape Town City and JL Zwane, are the only unbeaten teams thus far after four rounds of matches.

After an unbeaten three-game run (Ocean View 4-1, Greenwood 1-0 and Hout Bay 1-0,) coach Patrick Weels’ Matroos outfit was surprised against Jomos Power following a 3-3 draw at Elsbury Park on Sunday.

Weels explained: “The reason for this result against Jomos was that we played three games in a space of five days. You expect to have your best players to play in every game to keep the momentum going, but that’s not always possible, so you have to rotate players.

“That somehow threw the team off balance. We cannot focus on the log at this moment as it’s going to be a long and tough season and sometimes you peak too early… If you look at the results this past weekend that says it all. At the end of the day we have to focus on ourselves and improve our game and take it game by game,” Weels added.

Weels highlighted that he was not too disappointed following their poor dismay in the regional Nedbank Cup playoff campaign two weeks ago in Caledon adding it was a good measuring stick for his young squad.

“Look, we did not have a preseason due to circumstances beyond our control, like no home venue, but that might also be a blessing in disguise as it is less pressure on the players and they can express themselves more freely.

The pride of the Northen Suburbs LFA face Cape Town City at Malta Park on Sunday (26 November) in what could be a real humdinger!
