Mind games: Saxon’s Zarrie in a hurry to crown Vasco as champs

Whether it’s mind games, reverse psychology or just genuine sentiments…Saxon Rovers head coach Zahir Arendse maintains that Vasco da Gama are still favourites to win the Hollywoodbets Third Division title.

This, despite the fact that his second-placed outfit, who have played a game more – closed the gap on the log leaders to three points following a 4-0 drubbing of Camps Bay FC at the Royal Road on Tuesday evening.

Saxons surpassed another contender in third-placed Crystal Palace (both 44 points) in the process with a superior goal difference followed by Cape Town City and Matroosfontein (both 39 points) in the fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Zarrie, as Arendse is known, is convinced that he cannot see any other outcome than Vasco walking away with the title this season.

“I don’t think anyone can argue that they have been the most consistent team thus far and will be deserved winners,” Arendse told No Bones with Jones. “I think many others also see them as the favourites for the title. I mean, we had a chance when we played them and we had to win that game but we didn’t – it would have been a different conversation if we had.

“So now we wait on them to drop points and the thing is they are consistent and don’t drop points easily – they don’t lose many games as well, I think they only lost two if I’m correct. So that tells you a story,” Arendse added.

With 10 games left the sparks will surely fly during the business end, especially given that the top six all still need to play against one another which will mushup the permutations.

Saxons and Palace will be present when the Fish and Chips Boys, as Vasco is affectionately known, host the much improved and tricky Greenwood Athletic at (15:00) Parow Park on Thursday afternoon – silently hoping that Greenwood will cause a stir and do them a massive favour!
