SAFA Cape Town’s Third Division Playoffs resume this weekend at Greens Sport Complex in Manenberg after being postponed due to the recent taxi unrest.
With the competition now entering the quarter-final stage, the battle for promotion is heating up. While knockout football is renowned for producing surprises, it is difficult to look beyond FC Tafelzucht and Durbanville FC as the leading contenders for promotion.
It may not be the most popular opinion but based on what both teams have produced in the playoffs and throughout their respective LFA campaigns, they have set the benchmark.
Under former professional footballer Shane Poggenpoel, Tafelzucht have looked organised, disciplined and ruthless when opportunities arise. Durbanville, meanwhile, have seamlessly carried their impressive league form into the playoffs, combining defensive stability with serious firepower in attack.
That said, promotion is far from guaranteed. Salt River Blackpool, YBC FC, Wanderers XI, Sporting United, OTB FC and Young Idols AFC will all fancy their chances of causing an upset and keeping their promotion hopes alive.
That’s the beauty of playoff football. One outstanding performance can change the entire narrative.
However, if current form, momentum and overall quality are anything to go by, Tafelzucht and Durbanville appear best placed to reach the final and secure automatic promotion.
The challenge now is whether they can cope with the pressure of being favourites, or if one of the chasing pack will have the final say. For now, though, Tafelzucht and Durbanville remain firmly in the driving seat.
