Pardon my ignorance but something does not add up regarding Safa Cape Town’s “precautionary suspension” of its Treasurer Wayne Weitz (pictured).
In fact, one is left with more questions than answers.
The Cape football Mother body released a statement last Friday confirming that Weitz, also the president of the Metropolitan LFA for the previous 12 years, has been temporarily relieved of his duties.
This follows after a committee – led by the Chair of the Finance Committee Ms Siviwe Tyali – investigated the alleged breaches and reported back to the Regional Executive Committee for consideration on the 27th June 2024.
“At this point, the investigation is primarily focused on assessing the adherence to financial protocols and the accuracy of reported financial activities,” Safa CT said in a statement.
“In the interest of preserving the integrity of the ongoing investigation and to facilitate Mr. Weitz’s full cooperation without potential conflicts of interest, he will be temporarily relieved of his financial responsibilities within the organization.
“During this period, which is expected to last until the bi-annual General Council Congress in August, an interim financial oversight committee comprising the Finance Committee and Management Committee will assume these duties, under the vigilant supervision of SAFA Cape Town President, Mr. Bennett Bailey,” the statement read.
So, if the investigation is done and concluded what is there still to determine? Also, the region confirmed that Weitz did not steal any money, yet it still creates the perception that Weitz is guilty.
Where was the oversight initially? Why were there no remedial or corrective measures taken? Why suspension? Does it not sound a bit too drastic? Is there perhaps more than what meets the eye?
Weitz, a former footballer for Sea Point Swifts and administrator for decades, has potentially a leg to stand on should he opt for the legal route but knowing this comrade he’ll probably just go down quietly.
Furthermore, one feels that double standards are being raised after the Safa CT has gone quiet regarding one of its employees that has been suspended for allegedly printing registration cards on the side and getting compensated for it.
No Bones with Jones reported this a while back already and the region’s president Bennett Bailey said that they are “dealing with the issue.”
It has been months now and no communication has been forthcoming regarding action taken against the administrator for his alleged transgression. If there was nothing was communicated subsequently.
Our website reported back in March that the administrator – whose name is known to our website – has been making deals on the side with certain clubs to have their registrations expedited – at a cost of course.
“The evidence was on his phone and he could not deny it,” a source stated to No Bones with Jones back then. “One message read along the lines of ‘do we pay the money in the same account’ whereby the reply from the administrator was: ‘No, cash please.’ “So, we don’t know for how long this has been happening,” the source added.
