Modipa sets record straight regarding ‘outsanding’ Motsepe League travel subsidies

No Bones with Jones has been inundated with requests to what happened to travel subsidies that clubs in the Second Division were awaiting from the sponsor The Motsepe Foundation.

It is believed that each club would have received an amount of R15 000 a month to help alleviate the heavy financial travelling costs just to honour fixtures.

There is not one club in the Second Division that does not utter their frustration with what they deem as the lack of support from the sponsors and football authorities.

Our website has seen documents and correspondence written to the province seeking clarity on the subsidy matter but without any luck.

Well, the Chairman of Safa Western Cape, Tankiso Modipa, gave his reply and reminded the public that the Motsepe League is not a “Profit League” but a “Developmental League” and people must have that perception first to understand.

“The second point is that when you joined the Safa league it was with the intention of getting promoted and not to make money. But we know when you run a club you need to travel and all these things. But as a person it is between you and your committee to reach your goal.

“Not to say Safa has an obligation to assist you in that. But with the assistance that they give you it is your responsibility as when you sell a player – R50 000 or R100 000 – that money goes into your pocket. Safa does not get the money the money goes to the clubs and people must also think about that part.

“I always say when I meet with these clubs that they are owned privately and whatever they are sponsored or money that they make it is owned privately Safa has no say over that but they are playing in a league which is a developmental league.

“But we would like to do more to assist, but we have many clubs that we must look after and we are not club owners. Safa created the platform whereby the clubs in the olden days it was not easy for them to play professional football as there were no platforms created for them.

“So Safa created these platforms for them to be able to reach the professional leagues. If everybody put the responsibility on Safa to fund them it is going to be impossible. But in a way we agree we need to do more to assist where we can,” Modipa concluded.

Meanwhile Safa WC has released a statement regarding the extension of the league.
