Benadie tight-lipped on Stellies’ proposed takeover of UCT Ladies

Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie is tight-lipped on their alleged acquisition of UCT Ladies’ Hollywood Bets Super League status.

Our website reached out to Benadie who did not reply to the query.

No Bones with Jones has been informed that the UCT hierarchy has allegedly pulled the plug on women’s football at the varsity, which could spell the end of an 13-year era for the Ikey Tigers if the deal goes through.

A lack of sponsorship and and funding meant that UCT Ladies were operating on a shoe string budget, if any.

Needless to say, the high costs of maintaining a team at the highest tier of women’s football which requires teams to travel around the country to honour was just a brdige too far.

It’s rather unfortunate that things had to end for UCT Ladies, who have, from humble beginnings, written their name in the history of women’s football in Cape Town and the Western Cape with multiple Coke Cup titles as well as other league and promotion success.

In retrospect, the decision to sell to Stellies makes sense if you cannot financially sustain the club – from a Stellies point of view, who have already shown the eagerness to get a women’s pro side in order to conform with the PSL requirements as well.

Besides, Stellies is financially very much capable of pulling off something like this.

One can only imagine it’s a bitter pill for female footballers in Cape Town who already have to live off scraps, to witness another possible channel closed off with opportunities becoming far and few.
