SportPesa implements changes for “Tournament of Champions” – Safa CT player cards required for eligibility!

The growing popularity and demand for participation in the annual Sport Pesa Cup hosted by Cape Town City has forced the organisers to box cleverer – with some notable changes coming into effect this year that is said to be in the best interest of the event.

The second edition of this tourney, where all Safa Cape Town’s LFA champion teams will do battle, kicks off from 26 to 29 March 2026 at the Edgemead Sport Complex in Edgemead.

City’s media liaison, Julian Bailey, acknowledged that the inaugural event last year understandably had some teething problems which is why they have gone back to the drawing board to amend some of the competition’s rules.

Bailey confirmed that some of the changes made by the sponsor, SportPesa, was to increase the playing field from 16 to 24 teams to “add more variety.”

According to Bailey they are still in negotiations with Safa CT regarding the proposed changes

“Bailey explained to No Bones with Jones. “So, last year we allowed the players, as long as they were registered with a club, to play with their ID (Identity document) but this year we insisted that all players must be in possession of a Safa CT players card.

“This was because we found that some of the team has players that play in the SAB (Third Division) or Motsepe League (Second Division) for their club on a Saturday and they come here on Sunday and Friday to the tournament (featuring for other clubs). So we are eliminating that,” Bailey concluded.

All eyes will be on last year’s Vasco da Gama who will need to have their wits about them this year should they want to defend their title successfully.
