Swifts (Hope FC) soaring high, while Goolam’s Santos reaches a new low after 6-0 drubbing

While Sea Point Swifts FC (Hope FC) is basking in glory after beating Hout Bay United 1-0 at Erica Park on Saturday and displacing them at the summit of the league table, Santos’ chairman, Goolam Allie, has been left fuming after suffering a humiliating 6-0 drubbing by Cape Town Spurs in the ‘Cape Town Classico of years gone by.’

The million-dollar question now is: how long will Allie persist with coach Bradley August after back-to-back losses within a space of three days?

One would like to assume that Allie will probably allow August to see out the season out of respect, but with one of the biggest defeats in the club’s illustrious history, an early termination must surely now be on the cards.

Meanwhile, Hanover Park FC stayed in the hunt with a 2-1 away victory over struggling Junction Rovers at the Heideveld Sports Complex on Saturday. This further compounded the misery of the homeside and brought relegation just another step closer.

Needless to say, the end of the season cannot come soon enough for coach Chrissando de Weber and his troops, who have now suffered 14 losses in 17 games.

This victory ensures that coach Anwar Gallant’s Hanover Park FC side is still within striking distance of the new log leaders, Swifts (36 points) and Hout Bay (35), with seven games remaining.

Swifts, of course, can put some daylight between themselves and Hout Bay should they win their outstanding fixture against Vasco da Gama, which was cancelled due to unrest in Manenberg a couple of weeks ago.

The latter played out to a goalless draw against Young Bafana in Strand, while Ubuntu FC and Inter City also shared the spoils in a goalless draw at the Ocean View Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
