Former pro player and FN Rangers head coach, Arreshaat Daniels, has returned from his vacation in the United Kingdom refreshed, revitalised, and rejuvenated — and perhaps with a bag full of “tricks.”
But while Daniels was overseas, his Rangers side suffered elimination from the Nedbank Cup, a competition they have always respected and desperately wanted to win. They came close two seasons ago, only to fall short against Desmond Crowie’s Maties FC in the regional final.
Needless to say, Rangers’ trajectory since their maiden league triumph two seasons ago has been rather inconsistent to say the least. The Upington playoff heartbreak and subsequent player exodus — with talents like Giovanni Philander moving on to Polokwane City and then Chippa United, as well as others such as Zunaid Dollie, Katiso Mokoena, Kyle Peters, and Jayden Fransch finding new homes — left Daniels and his lieutenants, Shaun Oliver and Kyle Januarie, with the unenviable task of rebuilding from scratch.
Daniels, who resumes training tomorrow following his break overseas, knows all too well of the task that awaits him.
“I need to see what’s been brewing whilst I was away,” Daniels told No Bones with Jones. “There were a few players that the coaching staff had a look at, but I should know more when I return tomorrow,” added the former Santos player.
According to “Saatjie,” as Daniels is affectionately known, several positions have already been earmarked for strengthening to better complement the squad.
“We’re looking to add a left back, and we’re also very keen on wingers and, of course, strikers to add more depth. The season is long, and rotation will be important. We also need a goalkeeper, and coach Wazeed Stellenboom is currently working with the goalies, keeping a close eye on that department,” Daniels concluded.
