The biggest drawcard for the 2026 Silver Spurs Veterans Cup is that of former Bafana Bafana winger Franklin Cale and his contingent from Fish Hoek.
It’s expected that Cale could feature a star-studded line-up who are eagerly anticipating their debut at the popular event which kicks from 28 October to 1 November at the Johnson Sport Complex in Rylands.
So, too, might other former PSL stars like Nathan Paulse, Ricardo Scheepers, Alfonso Topley, Colin Moos amongst others.
A total of 68 teams will compete across the Over35, – o.40, – o.45 and o.50’s division in search of glory in the almost week-long event. Furthermore, it will indeed be an occasion for the stars of yesteryear to roll back the clock and
When Spurs’ Victor Tajoodien and his executive started the Veterans Cup in 2015 – as a means of sustaining the club for the future – little did they know how popular and high in demand the event would become.
“If I can be brutally honest without this event we wouldn’t survive, you know,” Tajoodien acknowledged to No Bones with Jones. “It covers our Third Division league, it covers our juniors and everyone one knows to play soccer is very expensive and therefore these fees have to be paid you know.
“Referees fees, registration fees, doctor bills and all those other aspects like … transport and equipment and this all adds up at the end of the day,” Tajoodien added.
“Bra Vic” as Tajoodien called, also sits with the unenviable task every year where he has to inform clubs when their quota for participation has been reached.
“We are a bit in a catch-22 when it comes to the hosting of the event,” Tajoodien further explained. “Every year the event increases and grows with more teams,” Tajoodien pointed out. “This is very satisfying, but also it poses challenges, you know. We attract teams from far and wide and unfortunately there are times we have to infiorm clubs that there’s no space,” Tajoodien concluded.
