A simple and innocent introduction turned out into an opportunity to further his football career – talk about timing!
And the former Diadora FC and Premier United goalkeeper, Mujahid Sabera, “locked in and took the opportunity.” landing him a contract with ABC Motsepe League side Juventus Kakamas from the Northern Cape.
“A friend of mine introduced me to the manager of the club and we have stayed in contact ever since and tracking my progress,” Sabera explained to No Bones with Jones. “And when the time was right, I locked in and took the opportunity,” he added.
At age 21, Sabera still qualifies as an under23 giving his new side more options regarding the Under-rule. For a player so young, “Muji” as he is affectionately known, is also very experienced in the last line of defence.
The former Tafelzucht FC shot stopper said he is just grateful for the move albeit in a whole new environment.
“I have to give praise to the Almighty as He opened the door for me,” Sabera further explained. ” It’s tough to play away from home so you need to adapt to different cultures and lifestyles but by the Almighty’s strength I will push through all that I know as I have to take this opportunity with both hands.”
Now, many young footballers will probably have second thoughts relocating to the Northern Cape of all places to further their football career.
However, Sabera, a former Sivutsa Stars player in the Second Division is also well-travelled for his young age and knows all too well what it is required to overcome these challenges – especially for a goalie to get recruited from outside Cape Town.
“It’s been a while since I got this call to play away from home. I took the opportunity and I’m with the team for nearly a month now. My objective for this season is to win the Motsepe League in Northern Cape and progress to the playoffs so my talent and hard work can get noticed and who knows?” Sabera concluded.
Sabera started his football career with Red Rovers before he moved to Bayview FC. He subsequently moved to Rygersdal FC where he also played in the Bayhill Premier Cup.
