The seventh edition of the Gavin Manuel Memorial Schools Legacy Cup will – as in previous years – see a new champion being crowned in 2024.
This follows after the defending champion Westridge High succumbed to neighbours Rocklands High 2-3 (1-1) in a penalty shootout during a Round of 16 tie at the Rocklands High Sportfield in Mitchells Plain on Tuesday.
Another former champion Portland High found the going tough and followed suit when they were stunned by Wynberg High with a similar 2-3 (0-0) scoreline also via a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals.
Wynberg High who finished second in their group to Matthew Goniwe will now play last year’s losing finalist, Zeekoevlei High, who have vowed to go one better this year and are well on course.
The Southern Suburbs school beat another former finalist Mondale High by 2-0 to progress to the semifinal while the other semifinals will see the newbies Plumstead High take on Rocklands High.
Plumstead High beat Zola Business School in the quarterfinal by 1-0. After beating Westridge High,
Rocklands beat Oval North 2-0 in their quarterfinals to secure their spot in the last four!
In the girl’s section Manyano High is still very much on track to defend their title. They topped their group with six points from two games. They unfortunately forfeited their last game as they arrived late.
Manyano High will now face Harry Gwala High in a repeat of last year’s semifinal which ended second behind the debutant Oval North High.
Oval North also qualified for the semifinals against another newcomer Glendale High following their 1-0 over Westridge High 1-0 in their quarterfinal. Glendale beat Bergvliet High in their quarterfinal match after topping their group.
