Seaside Spurs head coach Gerald Stober revealed that they have registered former Bafana Bafana winger Franklin Cale (pictured) as a player as well for this season following the club’s announcement that the ex-PSL star will take up a new assistant coaching position at the club.
Stober, who surprised many by taking a step down in the amateur coaching ranks, has had an undeniably massive impact on the coastal team since his appointment last season. Stober, who led Seaside to an impressive sixth position, has made it crystal clear that the final decision to play (this season) will always be with Bolo, as Cale is affectionately known.
“But I must add, the value he offers as a player or a coach doesn’t come close to the value he adds as a human,” Stober told No Bones with Jones. “He is a true example for the younger players in the squad. One can see why he has been a pro for so long.,” Stober added.
The 41-year-old Cale, who holds a Caf D-licence, was mostly used off the bench and only made five starts scoring five goals and double the amount of assists last season.
Furthermore, it is also his leadership that plays a big role. Stober has in the past acknowledged how blessed he is with senior and former PSL- players like Cale and Diego Brown in his squad.
“I don’t need to tell you about his contribution on the field and he still has an eye for goals,” Stober pointed out.
“But like I said, the final decision ultimately lies with him. Whichever way, I will respect his decision as I know he has the club’s best interest at heart,” Stober added.
Meanwhile, the former Santos, Hellenic, Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana striker has indicated that their planning and preparations have already started for the new season
“We will be down in the week of 3 September to start preparing the body,” Stober added. “I like to have six weeks before the first game,” Gerry’ as Stober is also referred to, concluded.
