Seaside Spurs midfielder Damian “Dampie” Basedien was the goal hero after they edged out their neighbours Ubuntu FC by 1-0 in an Ocean View-derby at the Ocean View Sport Complex on Friday evening.
The 31-year-old attacking midfielder struck on the hour mark to secure maximum points and bragging rights for Seaside – who will for the next couple of days bask in their glory and rub it in the faces of Ubuntu – as these two sides will do battle again next weekend as it’s the start of the second round.
This victory, only their fourth of the season was much needed as it ensured that Seaside jumps above their rivals into seventh position after 12 matches. Their coach, Gerald Stober, is understandably chuffed with this side’s derby achievement given the fact that he was absent due to a suspension.
Stober was sent off during their 2-1 win over Zizwe United (Ikapa Sporting) for alleged dissent last week. Basedien, one of the club’s most decorated and successful players, has this canny knack who of scoring against their fiercest rivals.
“I cannot tell you how many goals I scored in derbies, but what is important is the fact that we managed to win back-to-back games for the first time season this season,” Basedien stated to No Bones with Jones. “As you know we are in a very difficult stream with quality teams that all have serious ambitions. We unfortunately are not there as team but our focus is to try and win most of our games and take it from there,” Basedien concluded.
