The soccer gods don’t sleep.
That’s according to Chrissando de Weber, the new head coach of Wynberg St. Johns (WSJ).
Now, why would De Weber make such a statement? It could only mean one thing: a date with destiny.
In a twist few could have scripted, the new WSJ coach will begin his latest chapter against none other than his beloved Junction Rovers, the club where he experienced the highs of promotion and the lows of relegation.
It is therefore fair to assume that De Weber can expect a mixed reception when he returns to the infamous and often hostile Harry Gwala ground in Heideveld for their Nedbank Cup tie on Saturday (15:00)
“Look, I always tell the boys that the soccer gods don’t sleep, they don’t sleep,” De Weber joked to No Bones with Jones. “But yes, the soccer gods have their plans and now I must meet my beloved Junction first.
“I’ve been there for a couple of season years and there were good times, winning the league and playing in the ABC Motsepe League. So the experience was good and I have to take this opportunity to thank Junction for allowing me to coach them.
“You know, I’ve always dreamt of coaching in the ABC and who better to do it against than Junction? The soccer gods also made it possible for me to achieve this but that is all in the past. But I’m with WSJ now and it’s a new adventure that I’ve taken on.”
Despite his affection for his former club, De Weber admitted that he is already relishing the prospect of facing his old employers.
“Look, I’m very excited to play against my former team and I expect them to come out all guns blazing,” he said.
“But for me, it’s not De Weber versus Junction. It’s WSJ versus Junction. Maybe people have got it wrong. This is a new adventure and my focus is now fully on WSJ.”
One thing is certain: when the whistle blows, sentiment will make way for competition as De Weber begins a new chapter against the club that helped shape his coaching journey – and with the proper tools and support from especially WSJ’s General Manager who serves as a link, De weber and his assistant Enver Solomons can only flourish!
