Double Cup delight – on same day – for success-hungry Vasco da Gama

Everything Vasco da Gama touches turns to gold and they have shown that their hunger for success knows no boundaries.

Fresh from their promotion to the ABC Motsepe League, the team from Parow Park has done what no other club will probably achieve – two of their teams, the Motsepe League outfit, along with their LFA side, managed to win two cup titles on the same day.

While coach Andrew Pequeno’s Second Division side saw off Barcelona FC by 3-0 500 km away in Beaufort to be crowned Safa Western Cape’s Nedbank Cup stream winners, their LFA-side, led by Elton Swartz, bagged Safa Cape Town’s prestigious amateur Coke Cup title when they beat the crowd favourite FC Tafelzucht from Mitchells Plain by 1-0 in the Athlone Stadium on Saturday.

How’s that for a double dose of success within the space of a couple of hours – not too shabby.

Swartz, who has definitely written its name in Vasco’s history books, admitted that he was speechless after the final whistle.

“I don’t think we as the coaching staff can take credit for this as it is all the doing of the players,” Swartz told No Bones with Jones. “The youngsters have been fantastic and they have shown it again today, because it wasn’t easy.

“Sometimes I needed to cancel the training sessions due to circumstances but they insisted we should continue. And if you have players like that then they will be rewarded,” Swartz concluded.

Meanwhile Pequeno described the achievement of the club as amazing and well deserved.

“The work done by our owner Paul on the ABC side and the Vasco exco on the LFA side over the last few years has been rewarded,” Pequeno told our website. “The LFA technical team and players have been successful over the last three years and coupled with the franchise team winning the RML and promotion to the ABC, is ensuring that the youth have a bright future to aspire to.

“We keep humble and know that this is football. Things can change in the blink of an eye so we must celebrate these successes today but tomorrow we start working hard again on our next objective. Yesterday is written in history now but congrats to all and to all the people involved. To all our supporters, keep supporting all our teams with pride win or lose and remember that we are in this together,” Pequeno added.
