Bradley August’s Inter City FC sent shockwaves through Stream A of the ABC Motsepe League’s Second Division on Friday evening after handing log leaders FN Rangers their first defeat of the season with a surprise 1-0 victory at the Wynberg Military Base.
In a result few saw coming, former Stellenbosch FC and Rangers striker Glen Hahn (pictured) proved the difference on the night, striking just before half-time to condemn his former coach Arreshaat Daniels to a first setback of the campaign.
The upset could have significant ramifications in the title race.
Not only has the victory boosted Inter City’s confidence and ambitions, but it has also thrown the door wide open for the chasing pack. The situation was compounded by second-placed Hanover Park FC, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Hout Bay United at the Downberg Road Sports Complex.
As a result, the biggest winners of Round Nine could well be Young Bafana. The Strand outfit have the opportunity to leapfrog FN Rangers and move to the summit of Stream A should they defeat Santos FC by three goals or more on Saturday afternoon.
However, that task may be easier said than done.
While Santos have endured an inconsistent start to the season, Gerald Stober’s side have shown encouraging signs of improvement in recent weeks, collecting two wins, two draws and just one defeat from their last five outings.
Then again, Young Bafana have been one of the revelations of the season under the guidance of Rezaan Jacobs.
The Strand-based side remain unbeaten at the Young Bafana Arena, turning their home ground into a fortress while emerging as genuine promotion contenders.
With FN Rangers finally showing signs of vulnerability and Hanover Park dropping valuable points, all eyes now turn to Strand, where Young Bafana have a golden opportunity to complete what could be a perfect weekend and seize control of the title race.
