Was it just me or was it kind of weird, yet admirable to see especially grown folks hasten for a photo opportunity with both the Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana coaches, Hugo Broos and Desiree Ellis respectively?
So rare – and unexpected – was the occasion that almost everyone of the attendees at the Safa Cape Town annual awards held at the Civic Centre’s Mayoral Banquet Hall in Cape Town on Saturday evening, thought the same thing: I’m probably never going to get this opportunity again… So get up on the stage and Carpe Diem!
At one stage I had four cellphones in my hands as requests from acquaintances to take a photo of them with the two national coaches – it was crazy but fantastic to witness. This is also why almost everyone arrived home by midnight and later.
Needless to say that it was no coincidence but rather by design that both Broos and Ellis could avail themselves for the football lovers of Cape Town – albeit for a brief moment.
Broos addressed the dignitaries and guests leading up to their Afcon qualifier against South Sudan in the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday at 18:00 challenging them to fill the stadium.
After all was said and done this was indeed a masterstroke by the region’s leader Bennett Bailey to have orchestrated and conjured up a scheme like this as it is an unprecedented occasion for the football public of the Mother City!
