It’s all system for the 9th edition of the Interschool Legacy Cup in honour of the late Gavin Manuel.
Manuel passed away in October 2015. The tournament debuted in 2016, and 2020 and 2021 saw the tournament impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The event finds another new “home” at Chukker Road Sports Complex after numerous unsuccessful attempts at different venues.
“Some good news is that the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has come on board to give the tournament a welcome boost,” said Tournament Director Sean Campbell. ”SafaCT has also endorsed this prestigious event.”
Meanwhile, defending champions, Ocean View High U18 girls, and Portland High U16 boys will have the work cut out as schools have been preparing rigorously for the two-day event.
Many schools have been engaged in friendly games which were used as preparation for the much anticipated schools event.
Last weekend a few Mitchells Plain schools namely, Oval North, Tafelsig joined Beacon Hill at a sports day where coaches were planning and strategizing their onslaught for the tournament.
Portland High also travelled to Bergvliet two weeks ago to aid their preparation for the tournament.
Zwaanswyk, Tafelsig, Blasc Academy debuted in the boys’ section, with Steenberg and Bergvliet making a return. Steenberg and Mondale are debutants in the girls’ section with Bergvliet making a return after a two-year break.
A total of 32 teams will battle it out on five fields, with vendors onsite and the best part of it all is that entry is free!
The format consists of four sections of four teams, top two progressing to winners’ quarter-final, with bottom two moving to plate section quarters.
Each team is set to play six games as teams play for log positions. Games start at 8-30am with the last game scheduled for 4pm.
