Roger says Bontas-duo adding value to Santos

Santos’ coach Roger Fortune has emphasized it is not in his nature to single out players.

However, Fortune did commend his two young guns from Bonteheuwel, Peter Wade Fish and Jabez Davies, who starred in their 2-1 victory against Ubuntu Academy over the weekend to make it two wins from two matches in Stream A of the ABC Motsepe League.

Fish and Davies are two of Santos’ crop of Bonteheuwel-born players which includes others such as Alfonso Roman, Ethan Visagie and Clinton Dyers to name a few.

The People’s Team, along with Hanover Park FC (first) who thrashed Ukhanya United 6-0 at Downberg Road on Saturday and second-placed Ikapa Sporting, are the only unbeaten teams in their stream.

According to Fortune the team is starting to gel with some positive signs early on, especially with youngsters like Fish and Davies coming to the party in a crucial home victory.

Fortune predicts big things for the duo but warns them not to get big-headed as they haven’t achieved anything yet.

“With the right attitude and work rate, certainly yes, both young players have a bright future as they are talented players,” Fortune told No Bones with Jones.

“They will play a big role for our team. But it’s a collective effort as I always preach and without their teammates their success is not possible. I must say I have a really good bunch of youngsters in my group.

”The players must bear that in mind – it is about the team spirit and the togetherness which we want to inculcate in the squad,” he added.

Fortune says the real test lies ahead when Santos’ travel to face Ikapa at the Nyanga Stadium on Friday.

”They (Ikapa) have a formidable squad under Rowan Hendricks and it will be a real test for us” Fortune conceded.

”I have watched one or two of their games and they also came to study so it will be a close affair. But as I said much respect for coach Rowan and it is going to be an interesting game,” Fortune concluded.
