Rygersdal would like to celebrate 50 years with Third Division title, Saxons will feel otherwise

Imagine Rygersdal FC clinch Safa Cape Town’s Third Division title to commemorate their 50th anniversary this season – just imagine!

One wouldn’t put it past them as they have been very impressive in their debut season in the so-called ‘Graveyard League’ because of its unforgiving and cutthroat nature.

However, to achieve this, it will be easier said than done as they will have to topple the log leaders, Saxon Rovers, who have been a cut above the rest and are sitting comfortably at the summit with a six-point lead over second-placed Rygers.

To think the latter at one stage, narrowed the gap to three points – but dropped points at home during a 3-3 draw against Premier United over the weekend, which meant that there’s a bit of daylight between Saxons and Rygers.

However, Rygers shouldn’t be so hard on themselves. Yes, Rygers were with their backs against the wall early in the match and were trailing 0-2 against Premier over the weekend, and some might say they should have seen the game out and not have allowed the visitors from Hanover Park to level matters late in the game to share the spoils.

But if you had asked coach Ashraf Calvert if they would have liked to be in this position, challenging for the league, I am sure he would have taken it with eyes closed.

Hence, one must be grateful for any point gained against tough opposition and not see it as two points lost. Rygers will also have to look over their shoulder as coach Byron Cottle’s Cape Town City will feel they also have a say in the title race in the third position eight points off the log leaders.

Meanwhile, there’s one certainty at the bottom of the log and that is that Good Hope FC are playing LFA football next season.

Things are so congested at the bottom end that clubs currently in 12th position, like Antalyaspor JPM Cape Town, could also still find themselves in a relegation battle should they not turn around their fortunes.
