UCT Ladies’ attacking midfielder Daniella Segall might have fallen through the proverbial cracks the first time round, but No Bones with Jones has established there is a concerted effort made to get her back within the national structures again.
The Camps Bay High matriculant will soon get a second bite of the cherry with an invitation for the regional trials for the High-Performance Centre which includes under-13, – 15, -17 and under-20 players.
The trials take place on Wednesday 27 September 2023 and Friday, 29 September at Johnston Road Sports Complex, Rylands.
Segall, or “Dee” as she is known in soccer circles, was the under-17 national captain for the World Cup qualifiers last year but for some reason or the other was overlooked and blatantly discarded.
The 18-year-old is described as a hard-working attacking midfielder that “covers the most ground in a game, hands-down”. Dee is also very versatile in the engine room and can play in the central defensive midfield position as well with great vision and an eye for a pass – she kicks with both feet as well which is a rarity.
“Technically sound and tactically on the next level,” are just some of the praises that get sung when Segall’s name pops up.
Dee was also part of the UCT Ladies-outfit that recently won the Sasol League Women’s title and will definitely be part of the Warrior’s quest for promotion at the Hollywoodbets playoffs next month in Bloemfontein.
Her three goals in the Sasol League do not tell the full tale, but judging by the number of assists, she is best suited as a creator for her strikers and goal poachers.
Given the fact that Segall basically has the full repertoire and one for the future of South African football, it will be imperative and incumbent on the coaches and selectors to ensure that she remains within the system to further assist with her development and to turn her into the next best thing in women’s football.
