Santos head coach Gerald Stober suggested that the early stages of his Santos career might be dishing him “lemons” at the moment, but the former Bafana Bafana striker intends to turn his lemons into something more palatable in due time – lemonade!
“The game keeps giving me lemons,” Stober said jokingly to No Bones with Jones. “But we’ll improve and turn things around in due time,” the former Hellenic and Orlando Pirates striker added.
Stober’s comments follow after Santos suffered a crushing 0-5 defeat to Hanover Park FC on Friday evening and their second in so many games leaving them rooted at the bottom of the log in stream A with o points and a minus seven goal difference – or deficit rather. Even the newcomer Harambee from Chatsworth in Malmesbury, who is also winless after two matches, are above the People’s Team on the log due to a superior goal difference.
At the summit of the log coach Bradley Barnes’ Hanover Park FC are the early pacesetters who have netted in nine goals in two games signalling their intention while Arreshaat Daniels’ FN Rangers are the only other side thus far with a perfect record and is joint-leader with “HP” on six points after they edged Hout Bay United FC by 0-1 in an away match on Saturday.
It must be said it’s rather pleasing to see former Antalyaspoor FC and Young Bafana head coach, Ashraf Calvert Back in the league after an absence of a couple of seasons. Calvert has in the past pointed out that he has unfinished business in the league after guiding Bafana to their maiden title in 2023 but fell short in the playoffs.
Calvert also started the campaign with his new Seaside Spurs outfit on a positive note with four points from a possible six to maintain their unbeaten start to the season after a 2-1 win over Inter City FC on Friday.
Similarly, his former Bafana side was also quick out of the starting blocks and featuring in the top half of the log. This also due to a solid start from their new head coach, Rezaan Jacobs, who has been given the opportunity in the semi-pro league to showcase his abilities.
Meanwhile Cape Town Spurs played out to a 1-1 draw to fellow Cape Town Tygerberg rivals and newcomers, Saxons Rovers at Ikamva on Saturday afternoon Spurs’ new tenant, Ikapa Sporting FC, got their campaign up and running with a hard-fought 4-3 away win against Ubuntu FC away in Ocean View.
