Vasco da Gama captain Nathan Gertse (pictured) has put his neck out when he said the Hollywoodbets Third Division title is “theirs to lose” as he can “smell and taste” the title.
Gertse’s comments follow another convincing 3-1 home victory against Seaside Spurs at Parow Park on Tuesday evening.
With four games remaining, coach Andrew Pequeno’s Vasco (64 points) enjoys a seven-point lead over its nearest rivals, Saxon Rovers and Matroosfontein FC (both 57).
Needless to say that Pequeno’s outfit has been a cut above the rest and only lost two games from 30 matches thus far and drawing 10 which is the type of consistency needed to win this ‘graveyard’ league
While Vasco’s master tactician has been rather cagey about his teams’ title prospects despite their commanding lead, his experienced skipper Gertse is adamant the title is surely within their reach.
“We can smell it and taste it,” Gertse told No Bones with Jones. “That said we realise it is not a done deal as yet. Football is a funny game and can humble you very quickly. “So we have to remain humble and focused on the job at hand.
We will be professional in our remaining games and still respect our opponents. We know everyone wants to beat us therefore we cannot take anything for granted,” the 32-year-old former pro player concluded.
Vasco face Premier United, Matroosfontein, JL Zwane and Goal50 United in their remaining fixtures.
