If one didn’t know better, it sounds like Greenwood Athletic’s head coach Lionel Miller is playing mind games and buttering up his rivals from Vasco da Gama ahead of their Nedbank Cup Provincial Final.
Needless to say, there had been much debate over the exact date of this fixture with Friday (29 November) initially confirmed, then it was eventually changed to the Saturday 14:00 at Greenwood’s home ground in Retreat.
That said, Miller shared with our website that the Greenwood supporters and football fans are more excited than the players and management as they can smell victory.
According to Miller it is going to be a very tough task against quality opposition.
“They are new to the Motsepe League but are still unbeaten which tells you how difficult it is to break them down,” Miller said to No Bones with Jones. “Knowing Andrew…a very good coach, one expects nothing less. He has proved his worth when he was with Hanover Park and now with Vasco.
“I’m not shy to say that I look up to him like that because it takes some doing getting teams to play the style and the discipline he brings, but we will take it in our stride. Like I said before we got here with hard work and determination,” Pony, as Miller is called, added.
Greenwood has a thirst for success and there is definitely a yearning for more silverware on a bigger stage – and with the club so close to another historic feat, Miller is surely set to make the most of this opportunity.
“The reality is this one counts for the big prize, so we won’t just try and make the numbers full but we will want to be counted as well,” Miller further explained. “It will be a hard, tough fixture against Vasco, but we got here so we have to face our challenge.
“It was frustrating not knowing how to prepare because we were preparing for a double header this weekend, but now we have to turn our focus to another final, but with that said, football is football and the game has to go on,” Miller concluded.
