Cape Town Spurs’ recent remodelling of its academy has forced the club to make quite a few concessions.
One such compromise, is the decision of the 2019 champion not to partake in the 2026 FC Kapstadt which came as a major surprise.Be that as it may, the reality is that the Spurs hierarchy decided not to register their respective youth sides for the tournament which kicks off from 30 September to 4 October across various venues in the Mother City.
Spurs’ CEO, Alexi Efstathiou, explained to No Bones with Jones why they made the bold call to not be part of the event: “I understand the surprise about Kapstadt. To clarify: we are a club in transition under our new model. The Urban Warrior Soccer Schools project was established in February 2026, and we selected the tournaments we would participate in this season. Kapstadt is not the only one we’ve skipped.
“As the school becomes more established, we will continue reviewing our youth-development progress and act in the best interests of our players. That said, we appreciate genuine interest and are happy to share more about what we’re building.
“I must admit that it also felt a little surprising to be asked specifically about Kapstadt, given that we haven’t had much engagement from you recently regarding the club, the school, or the positive community work Cape Town Spurs is doing,That said, we appreciate genuine interest and are happy to share more about what we’re building,” Efstathiou concluded.
