FN Rangers striker Darron Omaticus is under no illusion that it will be highly unlikely for him to replicate his goal-scoring telly from previous seasons in the Third Division.
The reason is that the ABC Motsepe League is obviously much tougher to compete in and has a shorter format of two streams of nine teams each.
This means that Billy, as Omaticus is better known, will have 16 matches (home and away) to try and emulate his goal-per-game average he maintained in previous seasons in the Third Division.
“Let’s not forget there are other quality strikers on Rangers’ books and competing in this league,” Omaticus told No Bones with Jones. “So, competition for a starting place is tougher and you have to fight harder for your place in the team.
“I’ve played in this division before and won it with Mitchells Plain United, so I’ll know what is to be expected. I think a reasonable achievement would be more than 10 goals, but let’s see what happens,” the 32-year-old experienced striker added.
According to Omaticus he’s settled in very well and quickly and is keen to break his duck in the league.
“I know most of the players and the coaches for a while so it was quite easy integrating with them and slotting into my role with ease. My expectation is to win the league and promotion and this is also what the club’s main objective is. We have a very good team and great coaches and we’ve set that target for ourselves,” Omaticus concluded.
Rangers start their Second Division campaign against Junction Rovers at the Royal Road on Saturday (18 November) after they enjoyed a bye in the opening round of the Second Division campaign.
The Maitland-based outfit also lost out to Maties FC in the Nedbank Cup ABC Motsepe final which according to their coach Arreshaat Daniels could well end up being a blessing in disguise.
“Our bread and butter (the league) remain our top priority,” Daniels pointed out. “The two streams means that there is very little room for error and there are quality sides that we are competing with. Hence, every game will be treated as a cup final,” said Daniels.
