Saxon Rovers head coach Robert Pretorious will probably be reluctant to publicly say what he thinks, but it would definitely be along the lines of preparing for the ABC Motsepe League playoffs in the near future.
It’s pretty clear that Saxons have just been a cut above the rest and hence nothing and no one can derail the champions-elect. But because Pretorius is a humble and level-headed individual, he’ll keep his lips sealed and cards still very much close to his chest.
Their narrow 2-1 win over Trinitarians FC at the Royal Road Sports Complex in Maitland on Tuesday underlined their ability to grind out a win showing their supremacy, but more importantly, took them one step closer to a maiden title after five seasons of competing in this cutthroat competition known as the ‘Graveyard League’.
Saxons currently enjoy an 11-point gap over their nearest rivals in Cape Town City (58 points), followed by Young Pirates (54) and Ashford Athletic (47), who are further off the pace and complete the top four positions.
At the bottom of the log, Goal50 United has taken a giant leap in their quest to avoid relegation after they caused one of the major upsets this season by beating Ashraf Calvert’s Rygersdal FC by 2-1 at the ‘Harry Gwala’ in Heideveld on Tuesday.
Without taking anything away from Goal50’s achievement, but Rygers are now winless in five matches with one draw and five losses. Surely Calvert has not become a bad coach overnight? So, what else could it be?
Meanwhile, Silver Spurs FC was brought back to earth after a crushing 0-4 defeat against Antalyaspor JPM Cape Town at the Hickory Road astroturf on Tuesday evening. This brought an end to a six-match unbeaten run for coach Kevin Lewis and his right-hand man, Victor Tajoodien and their beloved Spurs side. This defeat was another stark reminder to Spurs that they’re definitely not out of the woods yet and will have to keep on fighting until the bitter end.
This is also exactly what Matroosfontein FC’s Patrick Weels will preach to his players as the Northern Suburbs LFA side is in dire trouble and could lose their Third Division status. this season.
With nine games to go, things are looking very bleak for Matroos, who have lost their previous 10 games on the trot and will need some divine intervention should they miraculously escape relegation.
So, too, will YMO FC have to pull out a Houdini act to save their status for next season. Club owner Mark Slingers will somehow, by hook or crook, conjure up something to ensure they are back next season, with the odds stacked against them despite their game in hand on their rivals.
