Silver Spurs should be ashamed of themselves for not only dropping their fans who braced the blistering windy conditions, but also carelessly dropping two valuable points after a 3-3 draw against Greenwood Athletic at the Johnson Road Sports Field on Wednesday evening.
That said, credit should go to Greenwood for their tenacity and fighting spirit as they refused to walk away empty-handed.
It must be noted that Kyle Martin’s heroics in the Greenwood goal played a key role in their draw. Goals via Marc Jonas (2) and Rushin Abrahams put Spurs in the driving seat in the second half with a 3-1 lead, but a quick brace from Keanu Thornton and a late equalizer from Connor Jales secured an admirable point for the visitors from Retreat.
Greenwood’s coach Warren Lotters said he is satisfied with his team’s character despite staring down the barrel of the gun in the dying minutes.
“I am extremely chuffed,” Lotter admitted. “We also knew we would score at least three goals to get us back in the game. I also think we were guilty because we conceded soft goals.”
This point did however do very little to improve their log position, but Lotters’ troops can draw inspiration and confidence from this hard-fought draw for their next fixture against one of the favourites Vasco da Gama.
Meanwhile Spurs’ co-coach Mario Tito was less complimentary about their display adding they were their own worst enemy given the fact that the home side was in complete control.
“I am not happy at all,” Tito told No Bones with Jones. “We had the game (in our hands) leading 3 -1 and we played better football. Greenwood wasn’t in that game but capitalized on our mistakes,” said Tito.
The Silvertown based outfit squandered a golden opportunity to move into the second position and to assert further pressure on the log leader, Cape Town City – a win for Spurs would have brought them within a point of City, but it was not to be.
“Their goalkeeper change also made a huge difference as he kept them in the game late in the match,” Tito added. “It should have been an easy win to put pressure on the top. Now we have to hope for a draw between CT City and Palace and Vasco and Greenwood which is not ideal to rely on results going in your favour,” Tito concluded.
