City leaves “Sandpit” with tails between legs and sand in their eyes – with their spies in tow

Cape Town City was well aware that the odds and the history were heavily stacked against them going into their Hollywoodbets Third Division fixture against their nemesis, Silver Spurs.

Hence, they tried every trick in the book to unsettle and overcome their bogey team at the Johnson Road Sportsfield on Friday evening.

The Citizens sent out their spies during the week already to assess Spurs’ ‘Sandpit’ playing field and worked out different strategies as to how they would overcome the Silvertown-based outfit.

And if that was not enough, they even measured the pitch before kick-off to make double sure that the home team was compliant – but unfortunately for coach Byron Cottle and his troops, it was all in vain.

The reality is that if an opposition team has your number, they have it and there is very little you can do about it. It happens to the best of teams.

This was again proven when Spurs put City to the sword on Friday evening with a 3-1 victory at their home venue leaving City to leave the ”Sandpit” with sand in their eyes and their tails between their legs.

Some will say City came off lightly had Spurs’ striker Rushin Abrahams been more clinical in front of goal. Abrahams did however put the nail in City’s coffin when he scored the third goal late in the second half.

But not before Marc Jonas and Charl Combrink got their names on the scoresheet to put Spurs well in the driving seat.

City drew first blood when Sibulele Mguzulwa opened the visitors account but Jonas levelled matters to make it 1-1 when the half-time whistle blew.

The second half was rather one-way traffic after two fantastic goals from Combrink and Abrahams to put the game out of City’s reach.

Jonas was on fire on the left wing giving City’s right back a torrid time much to the delight of the home fans. All in all, it was a good day at the office for Spurs and it now sets the tone for them to bag a full complement of points with the doubleheader weekend.

Furthermore, it extended Spurs’ fantastic record over their more influential academy opponents. Alas, this win will mean very little in the broader scheme of things should they not get the better of Wanderers FC in Langa on Sunday.
